Foster son

Most Silmarillion fans likely is familiar with Eöl the Dark elf, the husband of Aredhel and father of Maeglin. Yet, what could possibly explain his deep friendship with the Dwarves of the Blue Mountains? One possible theory is that he could actually be a foster son to a Dwarven couple, after losing his real parents at a young age for some reason and be taken in by them. 

Eöl learns Khurzdul from them, and stays amongst the dwarves for as long as his foster parents live. Their deaths of old age devastate him, as do those of the friends he makes amongst their kind, so he decides to go back to the Elves, where sadly he’s not accepted. He’s more like a dwarf to them, than an elf.
Finally he goes to live by himself in Nan Elmoth where he is largely alone, since he no longer fits into either world. But he remains in close ties with the dwarves through his life and teaches his future son Maeglin some of their metal-working secrets, but never their secret language.
